The Saint Antoine Hospital was founded during the middle ages and is located on the pilgrimage route to Santiago of Compostella (The way of St James). Beginning in 1689 the building was modified by the last three bishops of Bazas. In 1698 the hospital was handed over to the Filles de la Charité (Daughters of Charity). Marie MONTIE, who joined the community in 1756 and became Mother Superior in 1767, founded the apothecary.
The shelves, in imitation mahogany, and the floor covered in carreau de Gironde tiles, were renovated in 2004. The collection of apothecary jars includes 16th-century albarelli, faïences (earthware) made in Hustin and other potteries in south-western France, as well as a large collection of Bazas glassware. It also contains 19th-century porcelain pieces. Other highlights include a remarkable collection of fumigation pots, hospital equipment (including a clyster syringe and a an Ombredanne ether inhaler), pillboxes and an historic pill roler device from Langlen. |
