The Sainte-Croix de Joinville hospital was founded in 1567 by Antoinette Bourbon, widow of Claude of Lorraine, the duke of Guise. It welcomed the sick and the poor from the principality of Joinville and the Abbey of Saint-Urbain. The hospital was handed over to the sisters of Saint-Charles-Borromée in 1772.
The apothecary includes a room where remedies were prepared, and a room where apothecary supplies were stored. More than 230 apothecary jars ar on display, as well as apothecary bottles. Traditionnal earthenware pharmacy jars (pots canon), eathenware pitchers (chevrettes) and several jars uses to stor theriaques, from Strasbourg, Lunéville and Nevers and made between the 18th and ther early 20th centuries can be seen. The collection also includs a still, a pill roller, a bronze mortar and tin tableware that was used by th people who were hospitalised. |
